Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1919-1967.

Alyse Gregory and Carl Zigrosser had both been close friends of Randolph S. Bourne. Their sporadic but dense correspondence about him began in 1919 when Gregory wrote to Zigrosser taking exception to a profile of Bourne written by Zigrosser. She strongly objected to some characterizations of Bourne made by Zigrosser in his January, 1919 article in The Modern School. The correspondence did not resume until 1948, a year when Gregory sent a flurry of letters to Zigrosser in preparation of her own writing on Randolph Bourne. In 1964, Zigrosser reintiated the correspondence by sending a draft of the chapter on Bourne from his memoirs to Gregory to read. Gregory's response includes a careful description of the cause of the split between Zigrosser and Bourne as related to her by Bourne. Also a recollection of Bourne's extreme fondness of Zigrosser. Their letters continue until Gregory's death in 1967. They exchanged writing and gave critiques to one another, and exchanged thoughts. Gregory related information about the Powys family and her late husbnad Llewelyn Powys, and asked about a collection of prints by Reginald Marsh given to Powys by the artist. Zigrosser and his wife Laura visited Gregory in June of 1966 and were abou to visit her again in October of 1967 when they were informed of her suicide, in the face of rapidly failing health, in late August of 1967.
